Shangri L.A. architecture as a state of flux curated by Ichiro Irie

As policy wonks figure out what a sustainable city is, I decided to build a model of one. Santa Monica: Off the Grid, illustrates a sustainable urban form that reduces energy consumption by promoting human powered mobility (walking and biking). This mobility system is achieved by changing the street pattern and architecture of the city. Bladerunner’s 2019 image of LA is a place that consumes massive amounts of energy, while my vision of the future is precisely the opposite. My utopian is a place where energy is efficiently used and humans get back to what we where designed for, walking and supporting public transportation.

I have created a new urban structure for the city that supports human powered mobility (walking and biking). Therefore streets are rearranged in curves and circles to encourage this type of mobility and discourage others.

With the coming of the Subway to the Sea and the Expo-Line Rail:Phase Two, Santa Monica will serve as anchor for these projects. Santa Monica is the region’s beach playground and will have to accommodate up to a million visitors a day by rail. How do we get a millions visitors to the beach by foot quickly and safely?

Apple offers limited Black Friday price discounts on Mac computers

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc’s much-anticipated Black Friday event offered consumers discounts on Mac computers, iPods and accessories at levels similar to years past, despite speculation about deeper price cuts.

Apple, a company renown for its marketing prowess, had stoked consumer excitement by announcing a one-day Black Friday “shopping event,” without giving any further details.

The company cut prices by roughly 5 to 10 percent on certain items. A 13-inch MacBook was being offered for $1,200, a discount of $100, while an iPod touch was being sold for $378, a discount of $21. The iPhone, which has been hugely popular since its launch last summer, was not on sale.

However, analysts said at least some Apple stores were matching the bigger price cuts of other resellers if a shopper brings in proof.

Space shuttle glides to safe landing in California

Space shuttle Endeavour slipped out of a brilliant desert sky and touched down safely in California after a nearly 16-day mission to repair and upgrade the international space station.

Stormy weather at the shuttle’s main Florida landing site forced controllers to divert Endeavour and its crew of seven astronauts across the country to Edwards Air Force Base, where it glided to Earth at 4:25 p.m. EST Sunday.

“It’s great to be back on the ground, and it’s great to be in California,” shuttle commander Christopher Ferguson said, standing with three of his crew members on the tarmac near the shuttle.

The shuttle program’s 124th mission remodeled the space station, doubled its crew capacity to six and repaired a rotating joint on a solar wing. Read more…

Microsoft Warns Of Attack Exploiting Windows Vulnerability

Source: CRN
Stefanie Hoffman, ChannelWeb

Microsoft is warning users of a malicious Internet worm after detecting a wave of attacks exploiting a recent critical Windows security vulnerability.

The worm has the potential to infect other computers across a network by exploiting a critical vulnerability in the Windows Server service.

Microsoft released an emergency patch last month repairing the error. However, if successfully exploited, the vulnerability could enable remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malicious file that would allow them to completely take control of a user’s PC.

Microsoft researchers first detected attacks exploiting the vulnerability last week. Since then, the number of successful exploits grew to significant levels over the weekend. Researchers reported in a blog that they noticed that the malware “gained momentum” over the last two days, when they saw a significant increase in support calls.
